Events and Festivals
Every year, Charlestown holds a number of fun and thrilling events. In August, the annual Seafood Festival is held, which is an enormous extravaganza of Rhode Islandís best seafood, lobsters, seafood, chowder, fish & chips, and every other type of food for every taste. In addition to the delicious food, the festival features a wide variety of arts and crafts, rides, rock wall climbing, a car show, bungee jumping, and concerts.
The Big Animal Circus is a classic circus that includes animals, clowns, acrobats, and various other performers. The Block Island Annual Music Festival is a relaxing grassroots festival. Additional events include First Night Westerly Arts Stroll, Star Gazing at Fort Drew Conservatory, and The General Stanton Fleamarket.
Charlestown is the central to all the beaches in the Ocean State. Ninigret State Beach is a three-mile long beach situated along the scenic Atlantic shore. The beach is known for its wonderful wind surfing conditions. Charlestown Breachway State Beach is known for its prime spot for saltwater fishing. Additional public beaches include Blue Shutters Beach, Charlestown Town Beach, and Quonnie Beach.
The Charlestown Breachway is the major hub for boating in Rhode Island. The entire area is ideal for boating, whether for fun, for sport, or for fishing. Residents and visitors alike enjoy saltwater fishing, kayaking, and sailing.
A number of gorgeous state parks surround Charlestown. Burlingame State Park and Forest features 3,100 acres of stunning forest that is home to extensive picnic facilities, a large salt water beach, rocky, forested hilly terrain, fishing, boating, and hiking. Exciting wildlife roam through the state park including white-tailed deer, eastern cottontail, muskrat, mink, raccoon, red fox, and river otter.
Ninigret Park features a state-of-the-art playground, ball fields, tennis courts, ten-speed bike course, and a freshwater swimming pool complete with lifeguards (that is seasonal). This expansive park is one of the most extensive in all of Rhode Island and draws visitors in the rain or shine.
The children of Charlestown receive their education through Chariho Regional School District. Home to four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, the district is known for its standards based grading, in which students are graded on specific standards in academic subjects as opposed to an overall points-based grading system.
In addition to the traditional schools, the district is also home to the RYSE School, which serves at-risk youth, and Chariho Career and Technical Center serves youth and adults in the following fields: culinary arts, cosmetology, construction technology and automotive technology.
Colleges and Universities
For those looking to pursue higher education, there are a number of colleges and universities in the area. University of Rhode Island is a large public university offering undergraduate degrees in a variety of subjects such as accounting, engineering, music education, fashion, and health studies. Rhode Island College is a small public college that is home to only 9,000 students, which is ideal for students who prefer smaller classes. There are also a number of community colleges in the area, including Community College of Rhode Island, Three Rivers Community College, and Bristol Community College.
